The government and press are trying to intervene, and while some shops are getting caught and being indicted with fraud, too many shops are still doing it, and getting away with it. Most likely you have seen the headlines about automotive repair shops being indicted with fraud because they lied or cheated their customers in one way or another.
Here are some tips on how to be better educated about your automobile so that when you go into a shop for repairs, you will know what to say and more important, what you should look for when the vehicle is in the shop.
The most important thing is to go to a reputable place of business. Ask your friends where they have their vehicles repaired. Ask them why they like the shop, what their fees are, and how long they have been using that particular place. Just doing a little homework and research will save you a lot of headaches and money.
When you take your automobile to the shop, specify the work you want done. If you need tires, let them know you are in there just for tire work. If the service advisor tells you that you need more work done, do not be afraid to ask why it is needed. For example, if he is trying to sell you a tune-up, and all you asked for was tires that should raise a red flag right away. There is really no reason for the mechanic to look underneath the hood when the vehicle is in there only for tires.
The service advisor may tell you that you need brakes or that you have leaks, both of which can be relatively easily spotted when the vehicle is in the air and the wheels are off the vehicle. Ask the advisor for measurements of components that are worn, such as the brakes, and ask if you can take a look for yourself. If they will not give a measurement or they will not allow you to view the problem, do not have them repair it. As a matter of fact, do not let them do any work and take your vehicle somewhere else. Most reputable shops have no problems with these requests.
If you need major repairs, such as engine replacement or transmission replacement or an overhaul, always get a second opinion from another reputable shop. If you have built up a good relationship with your existing shop, this may not be necessary. But if this is the first time you have brought your vehicle to a new shop, you really need to get that second opinion, even if it takes just a phone call. Sometimes it is not practical to have your vehicle towed from one shop to another, and then back again to the original shop.
By being an informed customer, you can save yourself hundreds of dollars on car repair costs over the years. It’s not cheap to maintain your vehicle these days, you should do your homework when it comes to finding a good shop so that you do not become a victim of automotive repair fraud.

An owner might be quick to reject the idea of certain repairs that need to be done because it can affect the selling value. Having it in the shop will ensure that the inspection is thorough and unbiased. Note that a car which is “ready to show” must be full-functioning and have zero parts to repair internally or externally. If you intend to purchase a car for the purpose of restoring it and to make it your own project, then of course, expect a few defects.
Exterior trims and emblems need to match the model of the car because some might be difficult to find, if the potential car has the wrong one. When the original paint color has been replaced, the car devalues. Inspect the car plate for the paint code and refer to the service manual in order to find out. In order to check the interior, first check to see whether the carpet has been replaced. If so, it must be the same type and quality as the original. With the car owner’s permission, peel off a tiny part at the back. This will give you an idea if the carpets have been replaced. Another clue about the car is that if the carpet is wet, there might be a leak. Major leaks are costly to repair and if not remedied immediately will cause rapid corrosion. Worn out steering wheels are hard to restore as well. The panels and upholstery must be in top condition. They should be the original ones from the time the car was purchased.
After the drive test, open the hood and examine the components underneath. Stains will indicate oil and water leaks in the past. The wiring should be neat and well-routed. A fairly new battery should not have corroded terminals. Pull the dipstick and check the oil level. Oil should not have a milky or grayish shade.

Studebaker, better known as one of the largest manufacturers of horse back drawn vehicles, began producing wagons at the blacksmith shop of Henry and Clem Studebaker in 1852. However, the company started producing electric automobile in 1902 then quickly changed to gasoline-powered cars. Still the merit of their electric car products were of such high caliber that Thomas Edison purchased factory release product number # 2. Studebaker was famous in manufacturing class and reliable cars that stand out in creating new speed records. The company joined with Piece-Arrow then experienced annihilation in 1933, but the company survived with the released of 1930s Depression to the market. Into the 1950′s the auto firm survived yet again an automotive industry corporate remake being purchased and integrated into the mighty motorcar engineering and design innovator – The Packard Motor Company of Detroit Michigan.
How was it that this simple “wagon maker”, well known and respected who actually made Abraham Lincolns horse drawn wagon entered the automotive field? Studebaker was an early innovator experimenting, producing and selling electric and later gasoline powered cars. Indeed Tomas Alva Edison himself (read the well known American innovator and inventor who laid the foundation for the great General Electric GE Company of our day), purchased the second vehicle built a produced by Studebaker. Studebaker lived on, kept innovating, and was known for its reputation of well designed, innovative and reliable American built vehicles.
The company produced quality cars, better known to be “coming or going cars.” Humorist couldn’t differentiate the front from the back because the front and rear side of the car were alike. Studebaker released their three-box designs in 1949. It includes Land Cruiser, Commander and Studebaker Champion. Meanwhile, Commander and Land Cruiser had the same technology of the Champion models such as extended rear door, front fenders, longer wheelbase and hood.
Studebaker cars were famous to be “coming or going cars.” The front to rear were alike that humorist couldn’t identify the front from the back. The company released their three-box post war model in 1949. They were the Land Cruiser, Studebaker Champion, and Commander. Land Cruiser and Commander had several features of the Champion models such as front fenders, extended rear door, longer wheelbase and hood. Studebaker models had some features of the prewar designs. The 2.8 liter model has an 80 horsepower six-cylinder engine that was used by the Champion model. Meanwhile, the 3.7 Liter Commander/Land Cruiser was released in the early 1930s. Studebaker designs had not changed until the release of “bullet nose” models in 1950. However, other car manufacturers outrun the company’s style during the same year. Studebaker had some outstanding models such as Hawk series and Avanti with their advanced styling, fiberglass bodies, and such introduced such innovative features as safer faster “disc brakes”, as well as optional “turbocharged” turbo engines. But they experienced extreme difficulty because of several independent car producers and lost its fame and luster in 1966, culminating in the closure of their Canadian auto assembly in the Canadian steel town of Hamilton, Ontario.
Studebaker can never be replaced by today’s high technology cars. They started from a small company and became famous of their quality designs, and reliable models.

“The ugly duckling. It may be rusty, but it runs better than most newer cars” What things have gone wrong with the car? Headliner falling down.
Driver seat a little twisted and ripped.
Engine valve noise, probably from driving 388,000 KMs.
Fenders and rear quarters rusted as well as other rust spots and peeling paint.
Speakers blown, but still work OK.
Valve cover leak and minor power steering hose leak.
General comments? Bought the truck for $500 and drove it 143 KMs home, and was surprised at how well it was running, and how well it rode for being a rusted cheap Bronco II.
The body is ugly brown on tan with a shade of rust, but still solid. Most of it is just surface rust.
4X4 works great, the manual transmission shifts good, and the clutch seems to be fine.
Heat works amazingly well, and surprisingly so does the A/C.
Handles bumps really well, and you do feel them, but you feel them in most true 44 offroad vehicles.
Carburated engine starts up quick, like as soon as the key hits the start position, it’s running, and very quiet and smooth, you can barely hear or feel the engine running except for the minor valve tick.
I definitely need to put in a tachometer in it so I know it’s running, because it’s so quiet that every time you get to a stop sign or traffic lights and push the clutch in, everything is quiet and it seems like the engine stalled, but it’s still running quiet and smooth.
I am very happy with this vehicle so far, even though it has 388,000 KMs. I would have no problem fixing up the body a little bit to get rid of most of the rust, and if I ever had to replace the engine or transmission, I would, but the way it seems right now, I almost think it would last another 300,000 KMs.
